Issue Groups
Lake Research Partners works with a wide range
of progressive advocacy organizations to understand the issues
that shape public opinion, including:
ACORN
Aging with Dignity
Aspen Institute
American Lung Association
Using focus groups and a nationwide survey, we crafted and tested messages opposing the proposed tobacco settlement.
We found that explaining that taxpayers would actually be paying for the settlement, through tax deductions for companies,
led participants to volunteer that this was not a "settlement," but a "sweetheart deal." That language appeared in numerous
newspaper articles, including USA Today and the Wall Street Journal. Our research findings were used to lobby members of Congress
and were influential in several areas. Due to our work in this area, the head of the sub-committee in charge of the settlement
submitted our findings and used our recommendations to set the price of a pack of cigarettes-higher than what was initially being
considered. Members of Congress also took our recommendations and began calling this a "sweetheart deal" for the tobacco companies
in order to cast doubt on the settlement. We worked with the American Lung Association to develop the immediate Congressional strategy
on the settlement and the press strategy as well.
California Health Decisions
Campaign Money Watch
We conducted focus group and survey research for Campaign Money Watch to test messages holding the Bush administration accountable
for its actions on behalf of large campaign donors. We found that adding the element of campaign contributions 'super-sized' the
issue-driven criticisms of Bush and made them more effective with swing voters.
Catholic Health Services of Long Island
We conducted focus groups and a survey in 18 parishes with
clergy, staff, and parishioners to learn about their end-of-life
informational needs and their views about the role of the
church in engaging parishioners on end-of-life issues.
Center for Drug Policy Reform
The group formed to help pass the hotly contested Initiative
685 in Washington state. This broad initiative seeks to loosen
restrictions on the compassionate use of marijuana, while
imposing tougher prison sentences on violent drug users. We
will use our research techniques to craft the messages that
will work best with Washington voters.

focus groups and surveys looking at the electoral impact of reproductive choice in upcoming elections.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America
We have conducted research on behalf of Planned Parenthood on an ongoing
basis since 1994. We have conducted qualitative and quantitative research on a wide
range of choice-related issues among Planned Parenthood's donors and among voters nationwide.
We continue to update this research as Planned Parenthood sets its agenda each year looking
at choice, family planning, sex education, parental notification and consent around abortion
and contraception, contraceptive coverage, international family planning, and medical abortions.
We have also conducted research on the state level for many Planned Parenthood affiliates on local
issues, such as contraceptive equity, parental notification and comprehensive sex education.
